I have been practising yoga since 2002 and Iyengar yoga specifically since 2005. I previously worked full time as an IT consultant and found that this style of yoga radically improved my posture and strength. Over the years, it continued to transform my overall awareness or body intelligence. I love the accessibility, precision and detail within Iyengar yoga and decided to become a teacher in order to deepen my understanding of this vast subject and, hopefully, to help others experience some of the benefits I enjoy! Although lockdown temporarily halted face to face classes, I’m pleased to say we adapted well to online classes and the student community stayed connected. Although face to face classes have now resumed, online classes have continued to be offered to provide greater flexibility and convenience.
I consider some of the hallmarks of Iyengar yoga to be its innovative and explorative approach, that provides inclusivity for all types of bodies and fitness levels. The Iyengar methodology allows everyone to practice safely, whatever their starting point. Teachers are trained to provide clear instructions and demonstrations, as well as specific corrections for each individual. Props are used to help students learn how to work towards the postures they could not otherwise attain. Once you start your learning journey and begin to develop your own practice, it really supports you throughout your life - as your body changes, so does your practice.
